Home Sweet Dorm

My daughter will be a freshman in college this fall.  We have already purchased the comforter, lamp, trash can, etc. on a whirlwind shopping trip with her future roommate and her mom. (Can you believe we shopped at a center that had Target, Bed, Bath and Beyond, and Marshalls in one block with Hobby Lobby across the street ?!)  I have to say, it was a lot of fun and they are definitely going to brighten up that drab little cinder block box!  Here's a peek at the hoard at our house.... They didn't make memory foam mattress toppers for twin XL beds when I went to college!

I have also put together a tub of little items to make the first weeks away from home a little easier.  Here's what I am including:

Command hooks
A box of Band-aids
Kleenex go packs
Ibuprofen
Pepto-Bismol
Stapler
Extra toothbrush
LED flashlight
Glue Stick
Breath mints
Sewing Kit (pretty sure that won't be opened....)
Travel size anti-antiperspirant
Sticky note cube
Rubber bands
Stamps
Envelopes
Thank you notes (well she won't be able to say she didn't have any)
Ziploc bags
Clothespins
Safety pins
Antibacterial wipes
Tums
Lip moisturizer
Scotch tape
Q-tips
a cute container of paperclips, tacks, etc.
and....a roll of duck tape with the college logo

Let me know if you think of something that I left out!

I found this two part tote at Target.  I have organized the items into either "first aid" or "office supplies" in the two compartments. (That's as organized as I get!)

My daughter is away this week, working at a camp for young adults with special needs.  Since I am missing her (already), I spent way too long looking at dorm decorating pictures on HGTV Rate My Space.  I decided to add some colored string, ribbon, scrap book paper, fabric storage cubes, etc. so that my daughter and her roommate can do some more customizing if they wish to.  I also
made this printable in the colors that my daughter is using.  If you would like a copy, you can print it HERE. You will need to trim it if you want to put it in an 8 X 10 frame.

  1. This is great! I start college this fall too lol
I just wanted to add that the colleges might not allow duct tape though. Mine doesn't allow us to bring it. (I don't know why and I probably don't want to know lol)

I guess people get foolish with duct tape. I still got some in a graduation gift basket and I'm going to use it to tape the cardboard boxes I'm using for moving, but I can't keep it past that (which kinda sucks because it's my favorite color) :/

Just an FYI before anyone buys it and can't use it, check with your campus first.

  2. This is fantastic! Thank you! I have lived in the dorm in the past, but didn't really make it homey. I'm moving back to the dorm next year and a lot of the pictures I'm seeing just aren't doable. This is perfect. Ideas to make it feel like home, but not move my whole house in with me. :)

  3. I was just like this when my girls went away to college. I wish I'd had your great lists back then! I missed them terribly, but it was so fun getting them all ready for their college adventures. And for maybe the first time ever, I was SO thankful for their cell phones! :) I hope you enjoy every moment, and best of luck to your daughter!
