I made a stencil from a piece of cardstock using the tried and true fold and cut half a heart method. The hearts that I had cut out, were also put to use as positive stencils. The other supplies included colored tissue paper, scissors, a glue stick, a set of watercolor pencils, a paint brush, water, and a thick gold paint pen.
If you've never used watercolor pencils, you've been missing out on some fun. First you color with them, then you brush over the color with a wet paintbrush and watch the pencil color turn into watercolor paint.
Once this one dries, I will put it under a stack of books to flatten it, then I will finish it by writing "love" with the gold paint pen.
I used the stencil to color these hearts. When I applying the water, sometimes I stay within the lines for a tidy look. Other times I have smeared the hearts by using more water.
Below, I glued tissue paper hearts on the card and then painted over them with a little water.
Tip: Be sure to cover your work space with newspaper, because the wet colored tissue paper can stain.

After these cards dried and were pressed under a book,
I traced around some of the hearts with the gold paint pen for a little more pop.

These are very sweet Eilis!

Don't you love watercolor pencils? They're one of my favorites and they rarely disappoint. What a great idea to make Valentine's for seniors. I know they'll love them and these are really cute -- and fast, I think!
